How To Layer Necklaces

Layering necklaces is one of those styling tricks that instantly makes an outfit feel more you. The secret is simple: give each chain its own moment and choose pieces that feel like they belong together. From our experience at LILY & ROO, it helps to start with one necklace you really love, then add the others around it.

If you’re choosing bridal jewellery, layering is a lovely way to keep things personal and flexible too. You can wear your main pendant for the ceremony, then add a second or third chain for photos and the evening, so your look shifts gently through the day without ever feeling too much.

HOW TO LAYER NECKLACES IN A FLATTERING ORDER

Vary necklace lengths

Start short and work down. It keeps each necklace visible and reduces tangling.

  1. Begin with a choker or collar necklace. A choker sits at the base of the neck, while a collar sits a little higher and feels more structured. Either one makes a tidy ‘top line’ for the stack.
  2. Add a necklace that’s 1-2 inches longer than your starting piece. If you want to layer necklaces of similar lengths, use pieces that hang differently. A pendant necklace often drops lower than a plain chain, even on a similar length, because the pendant creates a visual drop.
  3. Finish with a longer necklace. Longer lengths suit high necks because they add length and movement. They also work well with plunge necklines because they follow the line of the outfit.

Mix thickness, texture and weight

Length is your first tool and chain style is your second.

A fine chain makes a subtle middle layer. A thicker chain can act as your anchor piece, meaning the necklace that sets the tone for the whole stack. Texture stops layers from blending into one shiny blur.

Weight can help too. A heavier necklace often hangs slightly lower and sits more steadily, which helps when layering similar lengths. Stay comfortable though. If you feel pressure at the base of your neck, swap the heaviest piece for a finer chain.

If you want to include pearl necklaces when layering, lariats and single large pearl necklaces work well instead of pendants, and seed pearl chokers add a unique, additional texture as a base.

Pendants give the eye a stopping point. You can layer multiple pendants, but keep one as the focal point and let the others support it.

Personalised pendants also turn a stack into a memory. An initial, date or short engraving can make your everyday layers feel special. For brides, we love pairing a simple pearl or sparkle piece with a personalised pendant that marks the wedding date. It is sentimental and still easy to wear long after the big day.

Use pendant necklaces for meaning and balance

Style your layers to match your neckline

V-neck

Echo the V shape. Try a short chain, then a pendant at the collarbone, then a longer pendant that sits inside the V. Avoid a very wide collar here, as it can fight the neckline.

Plunge neckline

You have more space, so go longer with confidence. A choker plus a mid length pendant plus a matinee or opera length chain looks elegant. Keep one layer simple so the look stays refined.

Crew neck

Let the neckline be your ‘top line’, then start your first necklace just below it. Add a longer layer for balance. If you want sparkle, put it on the longest layer so it does not crowd your collarbone.

Turtleneck

Long necklaces shine here. The fabric gives grip, so chains move around less. Go for a longer pendant or textured chain over the knit. If the knit is chunky, choose a slightly thicker chain so it does not disappear.

HOW TO LAYER NECKLACES WITHOUT TANGLING

Tangling happens because chains twist and rub, especially when you move, turn your head or wear your hair down. These fixes help to prevent necklace tangling.

Note: Let perfume, body lotion and hairspray dry first too, since tacky residue makes chains grip and twist.

Use necklace layering clasps

A necklace layering clasp is a small connector with two or three attachment points. Each necklace clips into its own slot, which keeps the chains separated at the back of your neck. That separation helps the layers stay spaced down the front too.

Choose flat chains over rope style chains

A flat chain lies smoothly, like a snake chain or herringbone style. These tend to tangle less because they do not twist as easily. Rope style chains are more flexible, so they need more spacing in a layered look.

Connect two similar length necklaces

If two necklaces are nearly the same length, you can connect them so they behave like one adjustable piece.

A jump ring is the small metal ring that joins the clasp to the chain. Clip the clasp of necklace A onto the jump ring of necklace B, then clip the clasp of necklace B onto the jump ring of necklace A. You have created a loop around your neck that makes both necklaces hang more predictably. This works best with lighter chains.

HOW TO LAYER NECKLACES LIKE A PRO USING STANDARD LENGTHS

Stylists rely on standard lengths because they naturally create a staggered effect:

  • Chokers (14 to 16 inches): sit snugly around the base of the neck.
  • Princess (18 inches): hangs around the collarbone.
  • Matinee (20 to 24 inches): rests between the collarbone and the bust.
  • Opera (28 to 36 inches): hangs between the bust and waist.

A polished stack usually uses two or three of these lengths, with one clear focal piece.

RECOMMENDED LAYERING NECKLACES

If you’re starting from scratch, keep it simple. Choose two pieces you can see yourself wearing again and again, like a short chain that sits neatly at your neckline, and a personalised pendant on a slightly longer length. Once you know what you reach for most, add a third layer to make it feel even more you. Layering is not about having lots of jewellery, it’s about collecting the pieces that genuinely fit your life and your style.

When you’re ready to build your perfect stack, explore our collection of classic and contemporary women's necklaces, from delicate chains to meaningful pendants and bridal sparkles that feel special but still easy to wear.
