Ask the Expert: Wedding Flower Advice From Katefloweran Studio
When it comes to planning your wedding flowers, the right arrangements can completely transform a space, bringing together colour, texture and personal details to create something truly unforgettable.
We spoke with Kate, the creative behind Katefloweran Studio, about her approach to wedding floristry, the floral trends inspiring couples this year and how to create arrangements that feel both timeless and personal.
With a creative background in fashion, textiles and print design, Kate brings a distinctive approach to wedding flowers, combining an eye for colour and texture with modern, sculptural arrangements that reflect each couple's individual style.
From choosing seasonal wedding flowers to finding the perfect bridal bouquet to complement your dress and jewellery, Kate shares her expert wedding floristry advice.
How did you find your way into wedding floristry, and what drew you specifically to weddings?
My creative path started in textiles and print design. I studied fashion and textiles at university, and that's where my eye for texture and colour combinations was trained.
When I moved into floristry, it felt like a natural extension of those skills. What pulled me towards weddings was how personal and expressive the work could be. No two weddings are ever the same, and that keeps things exciting.
Floristry is always evolving, and weddings give you the opportunity to bring that evolution to life, shaped by the moment and by each couple's own sense of style.
What is your favourite part of creating flowers for a wedding day?
My favourite part is definitely seeing the transformation, from the early planning and design conversations all the way through to the final result.
I love how the whole process becomes a collaboration, choosing flowers that bring the design together, from the table details to the dress and the transformation of each space.
There's something special about seeing an idea become a physical reality on the day.
What is the defining wedding flower trend of this year?
I love seeing how quickly trends in floristry shift and evolve. Some trends play with classic and timeless florals, adding a sense of refinement.
Roses, for example, are now feeling more organic and effortless, with an abundance of leafy garden roses creating a romantic, natural setting.
I'm also seeing more sculptural, textural trends with dense grassy forms and naked sunflowers stripped of their petals, creating striking sculptural shapes.
What I've noticed most in floristry right now is the experimentation with plaiting, weaving and manipulating natural fibres into floral work, finding that balance between the organic, abundant and art-led.
Are couples choosing timeless wedding flowers or bigger statement arrangements?
Most of the couples who come to me are drawn to structural, impactful, modern florals, which suit my style perfectly.
That said, I do work with couples who want a more timeless colour palette, the classic whites, blushes and greens that everyone tends to love and know they'll be happy with for years to come.
I think it's absolutely possible to have both. Pairing a timeless, muted colourway with a modern, structural design, perhaps incorporating unusual stems or bold shapes, gives you something that feels classic in colour but contemporary in form.
Simplicity is often the key to achieving that. Even a bigger statement piece that introduces a pop of colour can still feel timeless.
What wedding flowers, colours and textures photograph particularly beautifully?
A statement piece in front of a backdrop, whether that's a large floral installation or a minimal arrangement focusing on shape or texture, can work beautifully when it's cohesive with the space.
Keeping colour quite pared back, or going heavy with colour and minimal in variety, both photograph beautifully and can be achieved with most flower types.
I've always been drawn to how Amaranthus photographs, particularly its trailing shape and silhouette.
For tablescapes, a minimal, uniform design can be really satisfying to photograph, especially for long tables. There's something beautiful about one continuous stretch of a single floral variety used abundantly throughout.
How do you create wedding flowers that feel personal to each couple?
I like to understand a couple's sense of style and hear their initial inspiration, using that to explore where I can take things creatively.
It's about finding out whether they have a particular flower that inspires them or whether they're looking for my complete guidance.
From there, we talk through what's in season, what's current and how the venue and space might influence what feels right.
Ultimately, it's about piecing all of that together with their overall wedding aesthetic so everything comes together as one cohesive, creative design.
How should brides choose a wedding bouquet to complement their dress and jewellery?
In my opinion, the bouquet should be considered as part of the overall wedding design, but also as an individual piece that feels personal to the bride while remaining cohesive with the wider florals.
Sometimes that means paring things back to one or two flower types, or creating something more impactful, such as a trailing arrangement or a distinctive wiring detail for more of a statement.
It really comes down to considering the bride's overall look, including her wedding dress and bridal jewellery, and how she wants to feel holding the bouquet on the day.
The aim is for everything to feel complete.
What overlooked floral detail can completely transform a wedding venue?
I'd love more couples to embrace the possibility of using just one or two variations, perhaps playing with two different textures or materials that may not be an obvious choice.
With consideration given to their purpose, these details can genuinely transform a venue and create a theme that feels coherent and personal.
There might be one really special focal flower that features throughout the design and becomes the memorable accent for the whole wedding.
Or it could simply be a story of two contrasting colours working together, becoming the thread that ties everything together.
What would you recommend for couples wanting timeless wedding flowers?
My biggest tip is to go seasonal and choose flowers that are having their moment at that time of year.
Tulips in March or peonies in May, for example, are simply more abundant and at their best when in season.
There's something timeless about that alignment, too. There will always be a connection to when you got married and the flowers you chose.
I think choosing flowers that are true to their season never falls out of style. It just feels right.
If you had to describe LILY & ROO in three words, what would they be?
Elegant, timeless and accessible.
Which LILY & ROO piece would you choose for your own wedding-day style?
I love their pearl range and how versatile it is for all bridal styles. You can wear it subtly or go bolder and more obvious.
I'm also a big fan of gold and layering necklaces together. At the moment, I'm wearing their engraved Octagonal Saint Christopher Necklace.
For a wedding, I'd probably pair that with the Gold Single Pearl Choker and a matching bracelet, and finish it with a pair of their Chunky Gold Huggie Hoop Earrings.
I'm really enjoying the mix of gold and subtle pearls in their range.
What are your top three tips for choosing wedding flowers and a florist?
Find a florist whose work you genuinely love.
Start by looking closely at their portfolio, website and previous weddings. Get a feel for their style and what they genuinely enjoy creating.
Keep an open mind and explore new ideas.
Ask your florist if there's anything more forward-thinking they'd suggest for your vision. It's easy to end up asking for the same popular look without realising every other couple is asking for it too.
Having that creative conversation early can lead to something much more individual.
Trust your florist's creative judgement.
Once you've found a florist whose work you love, trust their judgement. Allowing creative freedom once the design is established is often where the magic happens.
